The selfie step is a short, live camera check that confirms a real person is present and matches your ID. Here's how to nail it — and what to do if you're asked to retake it.

The selfie is a live capture, not an uploaded photo. Your camera runs a few-second check that confirms a real, present person — then matches your face to the photo on your ID. It's the step that makes the Verified seal mean something.

Because it's live, you can't use an old picture — and neither can anyone pretending to be you. Follow the on-screen prompts (look straight ahead, maybe turn your head or blink) and you're done in seconds.

Get it right the first time

  • Face a soft, even light — a window or lamp in front of you, not behind. Backlight turns your face into a silhouette.
  • Clear your face — no sunglasses, hat, or mask, and push hair back from your eyes. Everyday glasses are usually fine.
  • Hold steady and centered — fill the frame with your face and keep the camera at eye level.
  • Follow the prompts — if asked to blink or turn your head, do it smoothly; that's how the check confirms you're live.
  • Match your ID — use the same lighting quality you used for your document photo so the two are easy to compare.

Why it's live

A live check protects you as much as the marketplace: it stops anyone from verifying with a stolen photo of your face. The capture is used only to confirm your identity and is encrypted and never shared.

Asked to retake your selfie?

Sometimes a reviewer needs a fresh selfie — usually because the first was too dark, blurry, partly covered, or didn't clearly match your ID. It's routine and nothing to worry about. Re-submitting a clean capture almost always restores your Verified seal.
